The olive tree is native to the Holy Land where it has been cultivated since ancient times. The Bible contains many references to the culinary and religious uses of olive oil. It is also connected to our Christian faith as Jesus prayed beneath the olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to his trial and it was on a tree, most probably an olive tree, he was crucified on.  It is the sign of peace between God and man.

Olive wood carving is an ancient tradition in Palestine that continues to the present day. It involves the skillful chiseling of olive wood and is most common in the Bethlehem region.

The process of producing an olive wood craft is labor intensive and consists of many stages, often involving the work of multiple artisans.  Drilling machines are used initially to attain the rough outline of the intended craft.  Next the piece is passed onto a skilled artisan who transforms the rough outline into a finished product by chiseling the details. Finally, the finished item must be sanded down and polished, the coated with the olive wax to give the object a natural shine and ensure its longevity.  Depending on what the product is, the process could take up to 45 days.

All the olive wood figurines and arts that we sell are hand crafted by Christian artisans in Bethlehem.  The wood they use are the prunings of the olive tree, which is an essential process for healthier growth of the trees and to generate environmental stability. So no tree is damaged or destroyed in the process.
